I think that one of the most beautiful cities in Italy – Florence, no needs special introduction. In addition to its beauty, Florence is also famous for its history and great people who were born in this city. Such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Dante, Galileo and others. Each of them has made an enormous contribution to the development of the city and the world art.
Going on a trip to Florence, I compiled a list of the attractions that I wanted to visit. But arriving there, I was once again convinced that it is a city, in which I should to come back, again and again. You must visit Florence slowly. Because it is historical city and there are so many works of art. So, or you go there for the long vacation, then you have plenty of time to have time to enjoy every moment. Or you arrive there for a couple of days, but in that case, you should go back to Florence again and again, to eventually visit all.
I have already mentioned about Florence, talking about the Dan Brown’s book “Inferno”. In addition to the main story, the book is also interesting because the author tells us about some secret passage, which connects the famous Pitti Palace (Palazzo Pitti), and the Palazzo Vecchio. To help you understand I will explain better. These two buildings are located on opposite side of the Arno River, which divides the city into two parts. And go from one palace to another you can go through a secret Vasari Corridor (Corridoio Vasariano), which is located on the Ponte Vecchio. Vasari Corridor is closed from the eyes of tourists, but it stores the original paintings by famous international artists.
If you are an art lover, do not worry about the fact that the Corridoio Vasariano closed to visitors. Because in Florence there are a lot of other places, where you will be able to see the works of great painters and sculptors.
For example, The Uffizi Gallery (Galleria degli Uffizi). This museum has thousands of paintings, ancient sculptures, miniatures and tapestries. We walked through the gallery of about two hours. But if you will take a guided tour, you will spend there at least three hours. Walking through the corridors of the gallery I got enormous pleasure looking at the exhibits presented there. At the end of the museum you can have a snack and enjoy a cup of coffee at a local coffee on the roof. From the roof you will see the magnificent rooftop views of the city and the Palazzo Vecchio.
I will not describe the paintings and statues represented in the Galleria degli Uffizi for one simple reason, because it is impossible to convey in words all their beauty. Taking a walk through the corridors of the gallery, I felt an indescribable joy. If you look at the date of the works presented in the Galleria degli Uffizi, you will see that most of them are made in the 1300s. And until now, most of these paintings are still the greatest works of art.
Another remarkable work of art, which is located in Florence it is Palazzo Vecchio. Palazzo Vecchio is located in close proximity to the Galleria degli Uffizi. Initially, it was a government building and there were various meetings. Today the Palazzo Vecchio is the town hall and museum. You can visit its rooms, admire the painted walls and ceiling. Palazzo Vecchio is made up of several rooms, the best known of which the Five Hundred Hall (Salone dei Cinquecento). Originally it was intended for the Great People’s Council meeting. The walls of this room are painted by great artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Take my word, it is an impressive sight.
The next place which you must visit in Florence, it is a famous bridge Ponte Vecchio, which passes over the Arno River and connects two parts of the city. Ponte Vecchio is the oldest bridge of Florence and the only one which has maintained its original appearance. Bridge Ponte Vecchio was built in 1345. Ever since its foundation, the bridge served as a place of trade, with the only difference being that the earlier there they sold meat, and now there are selling jewellery, souvenirs and watches.
Another famous place among tourists in Florence is the Campanile di Giotto and La Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. They are as close to each other that inattentive people may think that this is the same building. Unfortunately, I have been not able to see this knowledge only from the outside, because I have not had the patience to stand in a queue for a ticket purchase, but more about that later. And now I suggest you see the photos and see for yourselves the beauty of Campanile di Giotto and La Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore.
All of the above attractions are on one side of the river and in close proximity to each other. For example, from the Palazzo Vecchio to the Campanile di Giotto can be reached on foot in just ten minutes.
But the next attractions are on the other side of the river. So before you get there, you first have to cross the Ponte Vecchio, and then through the narrow Italian streets you can walk to the Palazzo Pitti, Giardino di Boboli and Piazzale Michelangelo.
At the Piazzale Michelangelo you can admire the huge statue of David, and from there you can see a beautiful view of the city.
Giardino di Boboli is the beautiful gardens, which are located behind the Palazzo Pitti. Giardino di Boboli is a famous park in Florence, which today is a museum of garden culture under the open sky. From these gardens offer beautiful views of the Palazzo Pitti. Palazzo Pitti is the largest palace in Florence. Originally, the building served as the residence of the Dukes, and later Italian kings. Today there is located the several museums and Costume Gallery. And also, in Palazzo Pitti every year they organize closed Fashion Festival.
The size and beauty of the gardens and palaces are really impressive. In my view, only to visit these two sites, you can spend one whole day.
As I said, I think Florence is one of the most beautiful cities of Italy. And in this city is a huge number of monuments of architecture and art. I have listed only the most famous, but of course not all.
Florence is one of the few cities that I really recommend a visit to everyone. And I am confident that there is no such person, who arrived in Florence, I do not be left out in awe of what he saw.
